We met last week... a little earlier than our normal 4th Thursday meetings because of Thanksgiving. I am very excited for the Holidays! Thanksgiving and Christmas are two of my favorites! I love how Thanksgiving has become the kickoff for all the hustle and bustle of Christmas... I don't know about y'all but the days following Thanksgiving have became quite the tradition for me and my husband. We spend those days and nights watching our favorite holiday flicks and hanging our greens all over the house. Each year it gets a little bigger and more out of control. I love the excess and chaos that this time of year brings!
But back to reality... we had a very productive meeting. About a week before we were due to meet my neighbor, Mr. Larry Laboda, called me to ask if our little old UDC chapter would be interested in taking part in one of his projects. So I arranged it so he could come and meet our members, those of you he didn't already know, and ask us in person. Thank you for those of you who showed up! I personally think Mr. Laboda is one of the most interesting and accomplished people you will run into around here. I had the pleasure of working with him when I was in high school at the historic site. He is talented and true historian in every sence of the word.
Mr. Laboda is in the process of restoring and rebuilding a historic home just off of Devil's Racetrack Road. He started the project last year and was making lots of progress until the April storms put a tornado dead in the path of the home. He is now in the process of rebuilding what was destoryed and restoring what was spared. Besides sharing the history of the home he wanted to see if our group would consider being one of the trustees for legal purposes. Those present agreed.
I'm very pleased that we were thought of for this project. I think it speaks volumes about how strong we are as a group and the repreputation we have in the community. And who knows what will come of this partnership... I hope we can continue to partner with Mr. Laboda as he is truly an asset to the community of Bentonville.
If you have questions, please let me know. I check my email often!
We don't meeting in December-- but we will resume meeting in January. January is my meeting... so stay tuned for more information. We will be meeting on the 4th Thursday most likely at Mill Creek.
Have a great Thanksgiving and a wonderful Christmas!

I'm a Bad President...
We are months into our new 2011-2012 year and this is my first post! Between moving this summer, being swamped at work and taking on new responsibilities at work-- I've been a little remiss in posting on our super-duper blog.
So to catch everyone up... The 4th Thursday in September and October we met at Mill Creek Church. We were excited to have several prospective members at each of these meetings! The September meeting was lead by our secretary who gave a presentation on the Carington Plantation in Franklin, TN. She was fortunate enough to travel to the historic site over the summer. We also discussed several new and old business issues-- some of which included our Spring dedication of the new Confederate Grave Markers that we installed.
At our October meeting we wrote thank you notes to all those who donated money to our Grave Marker Project as well as discussed old and new business. In all I believe we wrote over 30+ thank yous! At this time we have been asked by the historic site to fund the roadside pull-off signs and at this time we have not decided if we will be able to afford to do so. In addition to helping the site and possibly raising some more funds, we have been approached by the historic site about helping them organize a Fall History Walk that would be around Halloween 2012. Many of our present members were excited about the opportunity and it was decided that we would like to find out more information from the site. Also we were pleased to hear that we were awarded a grant to help finish funding the grave marker project.
I hope to post pictures of our dedication ceremony as well as pictures of the grave yard soon. If you have pictures that you would like to see posted in this blog, please send them to my email address.
Our next meeting will be November 17th, 2011. We would normally meet on the 4th Thursday but that is Thanksgiving (can you believe it is already November). We hope to see you at our next meeting!

The May Meeting, Confederate Memorial Day, and June 11th...
May 19th, 2011 Amanda hosted our May meeting. After the business part of the meeting Amanda told us about another UDC chapter that raised several thousands of dollars for a monument back in the start of the 20th century.
She also read a speech from the dedication of the monument that focused on being proud of one's ancestory but also being proud of the country we live in and the great nation that we belong.
It was decided at our last meeting that our last meeting for the year will be at Meadow Village Restaurant on June 9th, 2011. The phone tree will be activated to make sure everyone is aware.
Confederate Memorial Day was held on Saturday, May 21st. We met at the "ball" monument and a short program was held. I hope to post pictures soon.
Most importanly, June 11th will be the dedication of the unknown confederate markers. Please make plans to come. The ceremony will start at 2:00pm. However, June 11th is the start of the summer programs for the site, so there will be activities going on all day. Come out and bring your family!
If you have any questions about the 11th program, please let me know. I check my email regularly...
I plan to post pictures soon!

April Meeting...
I'm falling behind on my blogging and giving everyone updates and reminders. Shame on me. But I've been seriously busy with many other things. I'll try to be better.
This past Thursday was our April meeting. Jenny played host at Mill Creek Church. We had two new prospective members join us as we learned about one of our founding UDC foremothers from North Carolina.
The majority of the meeting however was spent up to our eyeballs in business matters. The payment for the cementary project is due once the stones are in the ground. The dedication of the stones is June 11th, 2011. Mark your Calendars. Also, Debra will be sending out an email or hard copy letter encouraging members to get as many donations as we can between now and our Confederate Memorial Day program.
The cost of one stone is $300. If you know of a business or a family (maybe your own) that would like to buy one of these stones, we would be more than happy to take the donation. We would like to keep our funds from falling too low, so don't be afraid to ask!
Also, our Confederate Memorial Day Service is at 10am on May 21st. The program will be small, but we look forward to seeing you all very soon.
Our next meeting should be the last Thursday in May and I believe Amanda is to be the host. More details to follow!

March Meeting Reminder...
Our March meeting will be Thursday, March 24th at Mill Creek Church at 6:00pm. We hope to see you there! Rhonda is to have an accurate count on how much money was made over the Anniversary Program Weekend.
A big thank you to all of you that came and helped out at our table. If you have not seen the picture of the Framed Cannon pictures that are for raffle, please come to the meeting so you can see how great they turned out for yourself.
We have plenty of raffle tickets available for sell if you would like to sell any to your friends, family and neighbors.
Also, mark your calendars... Jenny has been on the ball and has reserved a time for us to meet in April at the UDC house in Raleigh. That meeting will be April 9th-- a Saturday-- we are hoping to eat lunch before the meeting somewhere good in the Downtown Raleigh area (we need suggestions) and meeting around 1:30ish or 2:00 o'clock.
See you Thursday!

February Meeting In Review...
We had a great turn-out for our February meeting where Mr. Joel Rose was our guest speaker. We are very fortunate to have such a knowledgeable friend/historian to our local chapter.
To catch everyone up that was not present, we talked about the upcoming anniversary program to be held on March 19th and 20th. A sign-up sheet was passed around for people to man the table we will have set up to raise money and interest in our graveyard project. We will be selling the Christmas ornaments and aprons that were left over from last year as well as 8x10 copies of several pictures of historic places in Bentonville and chances on a large 16x 20 framed photograph.
If you are interested in helping either on Sunday or Saturday-- contact Debra.
Also Stephanie may have a way to get us the reproduction badges made for the dedication ceremony on into the Spring at a reasonable price!... stay tuned for more details.
Several UDC chapters from our state have donated money to our cause. We are very appreciative of their support and official Thank-you notes will be mailed in the near future. We have letters that you can send to organizations you deal with on a regular basis to see if they would like to lend us some support as well. If you want a copy of this letter--let me know and I'll get a copy mailed or emailed to you. Soon, I hope to have more information about our project so those out in cyberspace can understand a little better about what we're doing.
I hope everyone is enjoying this little preview of Spring and avoiding getting blown around in this terribly gusty wind! Please send your thoughts and prayers out to Mrs. Carol. Her husband was in the hosiptal some last week, but I believe he is at home now.

January Meeting-- A Review...
The January meeting was held on January 27th, 2011 and was our first meeting of the new year. All-in-all we had a very good turn out. Janet hosted the meeting and gave a very interesting talk on the Confederate Marines, something in which I never realized existed. And apparently, due to poor record keeping and a variety of other issues, not many others did either.
As for the business part of the meeting we did discuss in some detail the cementary project that we are taking on. The fundraising committee chair did report some of the findings as far as what we can and cannot do to raise money in conjunction with the site. And since our meeting I'm happy to pass along that our VP Stephanie has had a photographer come out and take pictures that we may be able to use in some sort of fundraising compacity in the near future. In addition she also took the pictures of the pin to a place in Goldsboro that may be able recreate it which would be another fundraiser for us.
All boiled down it looks as if we will be able to raise money through our letters to other UDC and historical organizations as well as raise money through the program we intend to publish for our Memorial Day ceremony. At this time the site is finding out if we would be able to put on a 5k. The idea of a history walk for October would also be allowable as long as we can wait to host it in the following year (2012) as the year 2011 calendar has already been set.
Our next meeting will be hosted by Nadine, the last Thursday in February which would be the 24th. Expect a phone tree phone call towards the end of February.
As a reminder: Mark on your calendars that the Anniversary event for the Battle of Bentonville will be March 19th-20th, 2011 and we will have a table where we can get information out about the cementary project, fundraisers, etc. Please make plans to sign up for a time to come out and help spread the word about our project (I'll have a sheet at our next meeting or email/call me). Also, our Memorial Day program/ceremony (and dedication of the grave markers) will be May 21st, 2011. This is a change from our normal Sunday ceremony as the 21st is a Saturday... most likely in the pm (more information to follow).
In the meantime, I'm starting to work on our Chapter's Annual Report which is due March 1st. If you have something you'd like to include in it, please let me know-- I'll welcome the help! Our Division Spring Board Meeting will be in Durham on March 10th if you are interested in attending-- please let me know so I can RSVP. The meal is $20.
